Real World: St. Thomas Episode 3 Discussion

In what will become a weekly edition to TheWavierWire, Mike Aurigemma and Jeff Balinski will sit down and discuss what happened in the previous night’s episode of The Real World: St. Thomas.

Jeff Balinski: YYYEEEAAAAHHHHH BBBUUDDDDYYYYY!!!! FINALLY! This is what I’ve been waiting to see a spark of this season. Just to summarize real quick, we went from two episodes of Brandon running a muck and trying to get everyone’s attention, to an episode with probably 3 minutes of screen time for Brandon, and a packed out hook up room with three full beds. Trey and Laura have really gotten on my nerves, but at the same time Robb and Marie have stolen my heart. I really enjoyed the connection between the two of them. What caught your eye this week?

Mike Aurigemma:  You finally got what you were hoping for, but I am still waiting for the drama and everything to implode.

I am really fed up with all of the Laura and Trey nonsense that has been going on so far. Unfortunately I do not see an end to this yet either and if it does end, it will not bring a lot of fun drama with it. I want housemates hating each other and wanting to kill each other. When is that going to happen for me. Laura would just complain the whole time.

Now the Robb and Marie situation is definitely interesting and I can easily see those two having some amazing arguments throughout this season.

One of the more common themes so far is how Brandon is alone throughout this. That will definitely be something to watch as this season rolls on.

I wanted to get your opinion on the Robb situation with his girl back home Emily. Clearly she didn’t trust him to enough and went out and found another guy. How do you see Robb reacting to this?  She was also supposed to come out and visit so we will have to see if that happens too.

JB:  Laura and Trey are THE WORST. There is no substance to anything going on there. Both of them act like kids who are at a sleep away camp. Making out on Ferris Wheels and telling each other “I like you” are the things of middle school relationships (I think?). Maybe the two of them just want somebody to play dress up with, but more on that later.

One thing we totally glossed over on our recap was Trey’s springing of the girl back home on us. Isn’t this something that usually gets covered in the first few minutes of the show? And not halfway through the second?! Oh, I wonder who Trey is sitting down to call. Maybe it’s his mom, or his boy from back home. What? He called his ex? Where did this come from? This is going to be the big Laura/Trey issue since Laura’s face looks the way it does without makeup and she is completely head over heels (I think that’s how she does her back flips, right?). That being said, I think it will be a bunch of boring nonsense that just takes up air time.

Okay, now what is with all the dressing up. So far, three cast members have put their costumes on. Laura donned a tutu, Robb got on his superhero cape, and Trey decided to cross dress a little (and revealed to the ladies that he loves shrimp scampi and bubble baths, take note, Laura). Unfortunately, Brandon dressed down instead of up and hopped in the hot tub naked. Either way, all that these four people want is attention, and I can’t wait to see what happens when they stop getting it.

Robb and Marie are going to be fine. Robb had a drunken night of frustration and confusion resulting in him drunk dialing Emily, his “girl” back home. Just so you all know, Robb has known this girl for three weeks. THREE WEEKS! And you’re leaving the club to go chat her up? I think this was just a result of the jockeying that’s going on between him and Marie and whether or not they are going to be romantic, so he’s just keeping his options open and falling back on the thing he knows is there. That is, until that thing tells him that it has been having sex with other guys.

I know exactly how it will turn out for Robb and Marie. They’re not going to commit to each other even though that is what they both want. Whether they argue that they want to enjoy their time in the house by themselves, or meet new people, or whatever their typical excuse is. The problem now is, the second the other starts talking to a member of the opposite sex while they’re out a fight or mopey boat ride is going to happen. I don’t think this stuff is going to blow up the way you want. It will probably be more sad than anything. They are, however, surprisingly cute together. The best entertainment we can hope for is if things go sour between Re and Red, they could have a nice competition of who can make the other more jealous. In that case, let the games begin!

MA:  Well I could not have explained the Laura and Trey relationship any better.  So I really appreciate you taking the time to write that out because I really did not want to have to dwell on that boring, boring relationship anymore.

I agree that the Marie and Robb relationship could end up being more on the sad end, but they also both look like they could get pretty angry in one second.  That is what is missing with Laura and Trey , but if Marie or Robb hook up with someone else I really think we could end up seeing some fireworks from those two.  At least that is what I am hoping will happen between those two.  Give me something MTV!!

One couple we have not touched on yet was the Swift and La Toya snug session that we saw towards the end of the episode.  Do you really think anything will happen between those two?  La Toya seems like a pretty fun person that could bring something to the show, but with Swift I am just not seeing it.

JB:  Is it racist for us to assume that these two should get together? I don’t know. What I do know, is that Swift and La Toya are the two biggest personalities in the house. They want to run the show. They want to analyze and break down everything else that is happening around them without engaging. The charisma between the two of them is unbelievable. And they have the best confessionals of anyone. The issue is they don’t really seem attracted to each other. Or, they do but know it’s better, as La Toya puts it, to not “mix business with pleasure”. They both think they’re hot shit and can get whatever they need elsewhere. Obviously everyone needs a little cuddle time after a long night, but I don’t think it’s a sign of things to come. I did really enjoy the reveal of all three of these couples being in the same room. I hope we get more of that in the future.

My power rankings for the couples are as follows:

1.       Marie and Robb

2.       La Toya and Swift

3.       Brandon and his journal

4.       Harvey Dent and Trey

MA:  No, I do not think it would be racist mainly because they do seem like very similar people.  I think the way you described La Toya was spot on although I am not sure I feel the same way about Swift.  He definitely likes to give his opinion and is a strong personality, but I am not sure if he has the confidence you think he has.  Only time will tell on that matter.

As for your couples ranking I would probably just put Brandon and his journal in the number 2 slot for me personally because I think he could cause enough drama to make this interesting all by himself.

Give me one thing you are hoping to see in this next episode.  Maybe we will find out what their job will be in next weeks episode.

JB:  What I want to see is Swift try to pick up some women. He’s really good at talking about what numbers he would wife and talking about how Brandon should act in the club. I agree he is probably mostly talk, so let’s see if he can back if up with some game. GET IT SWIFT!

MA:  You are all about having them get it in huh.  I do think it is time for the cast to go out and meet some locals.  Make us happy next week MTV!
