NFL Top 50 Free Agents and Destinations: #11-15

CBSSports has published their list of top Free Agents and The Waiver Wire staff is going to tackle the top 50 from the list to predict where they will end up.  Alex Herd, Greg Kaplan, Pete Rynkowski, and Vinny Ginardi will look at who is available and what teams will be seeking their talents for 2014.

15. OT Jared Veldheer

AH: Jared Veldheer wants to stay with the Raiders but he’s indicated he would be unhappy with the franchise tag.  The Raiders have a lot of money to spend and a lot of needs.  It’s definitely possible that the Raiders let Veldheer see the open market to focus elsewhere but if they can get a good deal on Veldheer, it should be hard to let him go.  I think he gives them a slight discount and stays in Black and Silver.

Prediction: Oakland Raiders

PR: It makes absolutely no sense for the Raiders to let Veldheer walk.  He has been very good for them and everyone knows that a franchise left tackle is an important part of the puzzle for having a good team.  The Raiders have a ton of cap space so they will pay him.  Although it wouldn’t surprise me if they were stupid about it and didn’t sign him before free agency and he wend to a new team.  But with Al Davis gone, it seems as though the terrible decisions are made a little bit less than they used to.

Prediction: Oakland Raiders

GK: When a team has as much money to spend as the Raiders, you can afford to re-sign your best talent, and even give them a raise. Veldheer can be as unhappy as he wants to be if he’s tagged, but it’s not going to change the fact that he’ll be playing with the Raiders next season. There’s a long-term contract to be worked out between the two sides even if a tag is slapped on Veldheer.

Prediction: Oakland Raiders

14. CB Brent Grimes

Brent GrimesAH: Brent Grimes is considered to be a possible franchise tag candidate for the Dolphins.  Like every other player in the NFL, Grimes would like to avoid being tagged and there has been talk that he may get a long term deal out of it instead.  Regardless, it looks like he’ll stay in Miami another season.

Prediction: Miami Dolphins

PR: Grimes is going to be back in Miami next year.  If they can’t get a deal done he will get tagged.

Prediction: Miami Dolphins

GK: Miami can’t afford to let a good defensive player like Grimes get away from them, hence why there’s so much talk of the team placing the tag on him. Good cornerbacks are at a premium, and the Dolphins won’t let their best secondary asset get away.

Prediction: Miami Dolphins

13. S T.J. Ward

AH: T.J. Ward played well for the Browns during 2013 and he may end up getting the franchise tag placed on him.  The Browns have expressed an interest in keeping him.  However, I think the Browns end up using the tag on center Alex Mack and let Ward hit the open market.  If that happens, Ward would make a good fit for the Eagles since he’s played for Chip Kelly while in college.

Prediction: Philadelphia Eagles

PR: While I agree with Alex that the Eagles would be a very good landing spot for Ward, I think he stays.  The Browns have a ton of cap space and I think with Mike Pettine bringing his new aggressive defensive scheme to Cleveland they will want to keep the good young players around.  Pettine has expressed a lot of interest in Jairus Byrd but he will not be getting him so he will resign Ward.

Prediction: Cleveland Browns

GK: Cleveland freed up some cap space late last week by releasing D’Qwell Jackson in what many saw as a very curious move, considering how strong Jackson has been for the team at linebacker. However, the extra cap space means they have more flexibility to keep Ward in house and continue to build their defense around him and Barkavious Mingo. While Ward may want to explore the free market and sign with a different team, the Browns won’t let that happen with their franchise tag.

Prediction: Cleveland Browns

12. OT Eugene Monroe

Eugene MonroeAH: The Ravens have said they would like to keep both Monroe and Pitta and expect to do so.  They came through on the deal with Pitta but that doesn’t really answer the questions about Monroe.  Monroe has expressed interest in remaining with the Ravens and talks have already begun between the two sides but he’s not expected to give them a discount.  The Ravens will likely have to choose between Monroe and Oher and I believe that they’ll save some money and hold on to Oher.  If Monroe hits the open market, he should fit in nicely in Miami.

Prediction: Miami Dolphins

PR: This is 4 straight picks where there is not a lot of excitement and the player is going back to their original team.  Baltimore actually has a good amount of cap space this year and they have already resigned Pitta so now they will move their focus to Monroe.  They gave Flacco all that money last year and now they need to keep him upright.  Monroe will be back in Baltimore.

Prediction: Baltimore Ravens

GK: The talk instantly after the Ravens traded for Eugene Monroe was how the team was going to  work hard on keeping the offensive lineman in Baltimore. Right now, Monroe is the superior player than Michael Oher, and talent speaks louder than anything else in the NFL. Oher has been a great story in Baltimore, but the Ravens have their eyes on getting back to the postseason. They’ll need to keep Monroe in their offensive line ranks if they want that to happen.

Prediction: Baltimore Ravens

11. DT Linval Joseph

AH: The Giants should be focusing their attention to their offensive line but that doesn’t mean they’ll ignore Linval Joseph.  Joseph has said he wants to stay with the Giants but the Redskins have said they intend to pursue him once free agency starts.  I think the Giants will find a way to keep him on the roster.

Prediction: New York Giants

PR: I can’t put 5 straight players just back on their original teams.  I have to switch it up here, but it makes a lot of sense.  The Redskins are looking at Joseph and they have more cap space than the Giants.  I’d say they arguably have less holes to fill on their roster than the Giants as well.  But the Skins want to go after Joseph and I think Snyder will make it happen.  Joseph wants the most money and we all know the Redskins are far more careless about their contract than the Giants, especially when it comes to defensive tackles… *Cough* Albert Haynesworth *Cough*

Prediction: Washington Redskins

GK: Linval Joseph is one of, if not the youngest player on the open market this off-season. The Giants had so many issues last year and have so many other free agents that fans care about, but Joseph needs to be priority #1. If the team is going to use their franchise tag, they should do so on Joseph. Success is built from the inside out in the NFL, both on defense and on offense. The Giants can’t afford to lose a player as young and talented as Joseph.

Prediction: New York Giants
